Bad Art: The Apple Tree
Complete with iMacs, a couple of G4 towers, and some Apple II hardware.
This was an idea in my head for quite a while before I was able to put it together. I did the project back in June of 2005 with the help of one of my long time friend/co-conspirators. It took a few hours to do in the 80 degree Massachusetts heat. Initially I tried to use high test fishing line, but that simply wasn't working, so we settled for using 4 wire phone cord off a spool. This was good enough to hold what made it into the photo. Some items didn't make it, for instance, any of the studio display CRTs I had.
Where did I get the Apple hardware? Well, my personal G4 is in there (a dual processor 500), as is my friend's G4 400. I'm employed at an electronics recycler, so hardware is easy to come by. The third G4 in the photo I believe was empty of components and most of the iMacs are non functioning or were missing various parts like CD-ROMs or hard disks. There's a Mac Classic, an Apple II and an LC III in there too.
My favorite Apple hardware is the Apple II stuff. There's nothing like booting Oregon Trail off 5 1/4. Other than that, I'm not an Apple guy. I have my G4 so I can play with OS X, but I prefer to work in Linux or BSD. OS X isn't just UNIX enough for me, and the fact that my hardware expansion options are mostly nullified is a turn off.
We also tried to do a Newton reenactment, but that didn't go so well...

The tree is fine and is in good health, we didn't break any branches or harm it. The electronics have found happy homes or were recycled properly.
